Can SATA hard drives be hot-swappable?
SATA hard drives can be hot-swappable, but you need to enable this setting in the BIOS.
Using the ASUS mainboard as an example, the procedure is as follows:
1. Press F2 or DEL to enter the BIOS.
2. Switch to the Advanced Mode.
3. Access the following directories: Advanced\PCH Storage Configuration, and switch the Hot Plug option of the SATA port to Enabled.
4. F10 Save the current BIOS Settings and exit.
Points to note:
1. Hot swap in BIOS is usually disabled by default. Please enable it.
2. The drive letter is displayed only after the hot swap function is enabled in the BIOS.
3. Uninstall the hard disk you want to hot-swap from the device Manager before hot-swapping.
4. A hot-swappable hard disk can be successfully uninstalled only after the system is started. A hard disk that is started during system startup cannot be uninstalled.
5. After the uninstallation is complete, you can pull it out boldly, just like the USB disk!
Although the hard drive may still ring (the motor will not stop after some hard drives are unloaded, the new hard drive will stop), the head arm will be back in the landing zone. Rest assured.
Operation Case:
My purpose is to achieve convenient replacement of hard disk (non-system disk) : similar to the USB flash drive at any time to insert or exit the hard disk under the boot state.
No disk array is created, so Raid is not considered. The SATA2.0 protocol began to allow hot swap, hard drives and motherboards sold years ago,
It should all be SATA2.0 or above, so there's no problem with hot swapping,
To achieve this, set the following two items in the BIOS:
1. Set the disk mode to AICH
2. Set the disk port to hot plug
